Why Title Tags Are So Important
Title Tags were invented as part of the first HTML standard way back in 1993.  Title Tags are used in two ways.  First, they appear as the title of a web page at the very top of the browser window, above the address bar, in what is called the title bar, usually the blue bar at the very top of the browser window.

This first way of using the Title Tag is interesting, but not very important in terms of the shopping experience or Internet marketing.
 
The second way the Title Tag is used is hugely important - arguably the most important single factor in Internet marketing.  When a prospective customer visits a major search engine and performs a keyword search, the natural or organic listings that are returned typically have 4 lines - the title, or headline in blue, a 2 line description, or snippet, in black, and the address url in green.

Since from an Internet marketing perspective, your website does not exist in a vacuum, but these search listings are an important part of your marketing or advertising activities, and so these ads are essentially a kind of 'yellow pages' ad for your site, products and services.
